What a stark and stunning glimpse into a world of which most Americans (except our sons and daughters we send there to fight!) have little inkling. It is easy for we comfortable Westerners to condemn a society where women must go veiled and walk behind their men. But this scene reminds me of the old Navajo tradition, where if the couple had one horse the man rode and the woman walked. It seemed terrible to the whites who saw this, but one has to understand the context. In a war-like tribal culture where attacks and raids can occur at any moment, the man must be ready to fight. He must be the one on the horse, because the life of his wife and children might depend upon his battle-readiness. This is not to say that I condone the abuse and oppression of women in Afghanistan or anywhere, but to ponder the original intent of such customs that, unfortunately, can easily tip from protection to subjugation. This photograph says so much, and its depth of insight leads to thought and soul-searching.
